2 weeks down, 936 to go?

Ryan is finally REALLY teething. When he got his first tooth in Korea, I thought, WOW that was easy. His second tooth, easy. He has been working those upper teeth since, and today all hell broke loose.

He is in so much pain that he can’t even sleep. He falls asleep and then wakes up 10 minutes later. We gave him some tylenol which helps, but tonight he is overtired and miserable. I finally rubbed orajel on his upper gums which he hates with a screaming passion, but hopefully it will calm him enough to fall asleep. I even called our dear friends Jennifer and Kevin, who have 2 Korean born children, and Kevin was a sweetheart and brought over some teething tablets for us to use if this doesn’t work.

I hate seeing him like this. My perfect sweet good natured baby is turning into a screaming monster! Put me down, pick me up, I want to play, ugh it hurts to play! Let’s hope this awful pain goes away soon!

Belated Notes on Korea

Filed under: Korea — Mike @ 9:33 pm

I’ve been meaning to make some observations on our time in Korea but never got around to it, so here they are finally.

People

* Man, there are lots of Koreans there. Seriously. In other large cities, London or Kuwait City, for example, the majority of the population looks native to the land, but there are significant numbers of foreignors visible. I had expected to see at least a small dose of Americans in Seoul, due to the close ties between our countries and the presence of the US military. I was surprised, however, to observe very few non-Koreans on the streets or on public transportation; I probably only saw one or two foreignors or groups of foreignors on any given trip into the city, and that was usually at a shopping district.

* Koreans are, as a rule, slim with small frames. Koreans who are even somewhat chubby are rather uncommon, and I can probably count on one hand the number of outright fat Koreans I saw on the whole trip (almost two weeks in a city of 10 million individuals). I lost about 8 pounds while we were there; while some of that was from low appetite, I’m sure part of it was the typical Korean diet of rice and lots of vegetables, with smaller portions of meat and fish.

Country

* Korea is very mountainous and very green (about 70% mountain). The mountains are heavily wooded and what flat land exists is covered with either city or agriculture. (See this or this for illustration.) Even within Seoul, areas that would normally be unused in the US, such as beneath the eaves of bridges over the Han River, are given over to rice fields and gardens.

* Korea is very wired. It seems like everyone has cell phones, and using them as cameras and music players seems to be the norm. The two relatives we stayed with had broadband Internet connections, including the house “in the country” down by Jecheon. According to Tom Vasel, the Korean government has a goal along the lines of broadband in every house in Korea by 2008.

* Internet game cafes are everywhere in Seoul. I made a bet with D before we got there that one would be within walking distance of the house we stayed at. As it happens, you could see one out the window, and there was at least one on every block in the entire city, as far as I could tell. Anywhere you saw “PC” was a game cafe, or “game bar” as hyungsunim called it.

* Traffic in Seoul is very thick. I was surprised to see a lot of SUVs (Kia or Hyundai, of course) and mid-size sedans in addition to the smaller vehicles; usually, everywhere outside the US that has expensive gasoline has a higher proportion of smaller, more economical vehicles. In addition, a lot of vehicles in Korea use LPG; LPG stations could be found throughout Seoul in addition to gasoline stations.

Hm, I’m sure I had more to comment on, but now I’ve forgotten what all I wanted to say…

Ryan’s first Doc visit

I think we are finally on Oklahoma time! Ryan has consistantly been going down around 10:30-11:30 and sleeping for 2-4 hours straight. He still gets up at least 2 or 3 times, but we are making progress! His times that he is up are shorter and shorter, and I am positive that when he is on more solid food than just cereal he won’t need those 2 bottles at night. Poor boy is hungry all the time!

Today we had his first doctor’s visit. Everything went smoothly and he is still very healthy. His heart murmur can no longer be heard, YAY! He is still coughing and sneezing, but the doc thinks that the coughing is from all the drool and the sneezing is from slight congestion from the air conditioner. (rarely used one in Korea, and would get a runny nose from them when did) So we have avoided being sick so far. YAY!

Ryan is 28 1/2 inches long, 97 percentile. He is also 18 lbs 9 1/2 ounces, 75 percentile. My boy is tall and lean. I thought he had grown a couple of inches since we got him and he has gained a full pound and 1 1/2 inches. I have posted a few new pics so check them out.

Sleep Blessed Sleep

Finally! Ryan went to bed at a decent time last night. We put him down for a ‘nap’ at 11:45 and figured he would sleep around 30-45 minutes. He slept over an hour, woke up, wanted fed and went back to sleep. At 2 am, he did the same thing and again at 4 am he wanted fed and went back to sleep. We officially got up at 10:15 today. WOW! I almost feel normal today. I didn’t get a shower yet tho. I think I will have to start showering at night before I go to bed.

Today we had some semblance of a schedule. After he woke up, I changed the 40 lb diaper (man, those things hold alot!) we ate breakfast, then he laid on the floor and played independently for awhile. I read a magazine (I am way behind on these) until he got fussy and wanted interaction. After playing, we took our first nap. Then we got up and played with Daddy until sleepy and then took another nap. We played until 7ish and then went for a walk in the stroller around the block and when we got back it was time for another bottle. We thought he would take his last nap of the day (he has only napped for 2 hours so far today) but he just ate and is now playing with Daddy on the floor in the living room.

So hopefully because we have monitored his naps and he isn’t taking one now, he will go to bed even earlier than 11:45 tonight! Please Please. I would just love a good solid chunk of time to sleep. He will sleep for 2 hours, eat, 2 hours, eat, and then 4 hours. Hopefully once we get him eating more solids, he will sleep more through the night.

He went down at 11:30 officially, so we will see if he stays that way. It is hard to feel normal when you are a zombie from lack of sleep. When you don’t feel normal, you can’t even begin to function the way you should as a parent. Thank God he is an easy baby!

Home 2 full days now

And still no routine. We are very worn out. Tuesday night we went to bed at 5:30 am and got up at 11:30. Wednesday night we went to bed at 4 am and got up at 10:30. Hopefully we will continue doing this until we have him around 11:00 pm bedtime, which is what he was used to before. The hard part is keeping him from taking a million cat naps during the day. Ryan is a hungry boy and is used to pacifying himself on his bottle. So everytime he eats he wants to nap. Adversly, when he wants to sleep he wants a bottle. So you make a 7 oz bottle and he only eats an oz to put himself to sleep. And he won’t go to sleep yet without one. We decided we would wait to work on that later. Right now he is dealing with so many changes. We hate to take away something that obviously helps him deal with this drastic change in his life. We have the all the blinds open in the house and talk in happy voices to make sure he knows it is day time. Which doesn’t work when he is cranky because he is sleepy.

We are really enjoying having Ryan in our lives. We love being his parents and even though we are tired all the time, we know that soon we will have a schedule and better sleeping habits. It is just hard to ineract and play with him when all you want is to sleep.

So far I haven’t had a shower yet during the morning or day. I usually find time sometime around 9 pm. Brushing my teeth? Naw. Still haven’t washed my hair yet since I have been home. Will have to make sure I get that done before Hav goes back to work.

Today we are gonna try to make a trip to the Library to see Mark and the crew. It is important to get out during the day so he knows it is daytime. No matter how bright you make it in the house, I think it is better if he is outside in the air. He got extremely cranky, so we let him take a nap now, but we haven’t been letting him sleep when he wants, trying to get him down to 2 naps a day and a full nights sleep. He had construction around his foster home in Korea, so he is used to taking a bunch of short naps in between banging noises during the day. I hope we can get him off this habit and into one that works better for us!

Well, I better take advantage of Ryan’s sleeping and get some things done while I can. Where did all my time go?? :P
